Salih Ahmad al-Shami is one of the contemporary scholars of Islam who expressed themselves through their conduct before their knowledge. This book is a biography of him written by his student, who says in his introduction: “I learned a great deal from his books; they changed my understanding of Islam entirely, and I was deeply influenced by his way of writing — a way of building, not demolishing.”
The author wrote his teacher's biography from his books and works, keeping his own feelings aside out of scholarly integrity. Our generation surely needs to read the lives of such practising scholars, in a time when desires prevail, self-interest stands out, and good role models are hard to find.
